Documenting the Congo from above

A map created using cutting edge technology has been published showing the Congan rainforest greater detail than ever before. 
The African rainforests are the largest in the world outside of the Amazon, and are home to thousands of species, including several endangered animals.

The new map visualises carbon density and was created using airplane-based laser detection systems. Scientists are using the map to empowering global efforts to protect the rainforests saying "it gives us a picture of how the land looks, the structure of the landscape, vegetation types and how it all changes over time
