Revealing the heat from volcanos

False colour imaging has been used to detect the activity of a little known volcano range in the South Sandwich Islands. The combination of clouds and ice can make it difficult to see plumes of volcanic ash in natural colour imagery, but using different parts of the infrared spectrum allows to distinguish between the two.
