The beautiful geometry of snow
Going beneath the surface of the white stuff
The structure of snowflakes has been revealed by Beltsville Agricultural Research Center as they electron-scanned snow to study crystal formations. A complex snow-crystal classification system was devised in 1966 by Japanese meteorologists C. Magono and C.W. Lee. Entitled "Meteorological Classification of Natural Snow Crystals" (pdf), it describes more than 80 types of crystal patterns.
