Choose Earth Collective Installation at The Barbican

We are honoured to have collaborated with Choose Earth Collective on “Smikra Wahikwa” or “The Future is Ancestral,” an interactive Indigenous-led installation that sits at the heart of The Barbican’s latest exhibition ‘Our Time on Earth,’ currently entering its final month at The Barbican.

“Smikra Wahikwa” is the creative visualisation of a love letter to Earth written by Indigenous leaders Sônia Guajajara and Célia Xakriabá and co-created by Choose Earth Collective. The words and symbols printed across hanging banners in a “fabric forest” remind us that We Are Earth and act as a passionate call to Western cultures to “reforest our minds” and put nature at the centre of our thinking.

The installation was conceived in collaboration with Choose Earth Collective, including Samantha Roddick, Sônia Guajajara, Célia Xakriabá, Earthrise Studio, Mishka Westell, PATTERNITY cofounder Anna Murray, and guest curators FranklinTill. The exhibition “Our Time on Earth” is being held at The Barbican till the 29th of August.

Last year, J eremy Lent joined PATTERNITY co-founder and Creative Director Anna Murray in conversation for the launch of his latest book, “The Web of Meaning”.

Jeremy’s work deeply aligns with PATTERNITY’s philosophy and purpose. He champions the link between Indigenous intelligence, modern science and design thinking to help catalyse an alternative to our expired worldview – one based on interconnectedness, within ourselves, with other humans and the entire non-human world.

As we are in the throes of our ‘Indigenous Cosmology’ campaign, we wanted to re-share the beautiful and meandering dialogue that took place between Anna and Jeremy in the hope that these words leave you feeling invigorated in this heavy time. This conversation explores a future defined by life-affirming patterns, principles and mutual respect.

THE CIRCLE: IS HOME is a new film project that honours the unique creative power of one of nature’s most potent symbols.

This film has been made in collaboration with filmmaker Gabriel Bryant, using film and imagery from the PATTERNITY archives. Written, directed and narrated by co-founder Anna Murray, the film celebrates the cyclical wisdom of life and the creativity of planet Earth at an ever-critical time in human history.

Honouring and acknowledging the source of pattern wisdom here on Earth a 5% donation from our new PRINT SHOP sales will support frontline indigenous Amazonian activists; the homes and land they love, the culture they defend and the deep pattern wisdom they hold — for the future of all life.

These activists and cultural leaders are being forced out of their homes and endangering their lives daily to protect biodiversity essential for the heart and lungs of our Earth and all its inhabitants to beat and breathe. The land, ecosystems, and earth-centred cultural pattern wisdom that these communities and individuals hold and are fighting to protect – are essential for the future of life on the planet we all share and call home.

Donations will go directly to CHOOSE EARTH a creative indigenous-led collective between several organisations and individuals in collaboration with indigenous leaders.

GRACE: With Valentines on the horizon, we wanted to create a new pattern artwork that was about sharing the love, for people and for the planet. This is the first time (since launching the PRINT SHOP back in November) that we’ve introduced bold bright colours into our vector designs. We hope people will connect with them on a more personal, meaningful level, to bring joy and the positive power of pattern, shape and colour into their lives, or to gift that to each other!

ANNA: It feels increasingly important in these challenging times that we can look to the language of design and creativity as ways to lift people's spirits as we know pattern so beautifully can. Our homes and the resonance of what’s in them feels more important than ever. With this new collection we also wanted to create a stronger link with our charity partners ‘THE HEART KEEPERS' a fund that supports and raises awareness for the indigenous activists on the Amazon frontline, individuals and communities working to protect the land and culture they love.

Out of about 20,000 known bee species in the world, T. carbonaria is one of only 500 without stingers. They also raise their young in unusual spiral shaped nests, known as brood combs. Taking on a similar structure to the more common honeycomb beehives, hundreds of continuous cells link together to create a staircase structure. However the T. carbonaria's world takes the form a swirling spiral, that could grow indefinitely as new bees are laid. Scientists are slightly baffled as to why the structure is formed in this way though, with Toby Heard saying "Perhaps, it is just the outcome of some random behaviour or perhaps it is adaptive… But then one has to ask, why it is not more common". Perhaps this rare species of bee prefers building with a pattern flourish, and finds satisfaction in creating patterns within patterns.

The phobia, known as Trypophobia, is not officially recognized in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manuel of Mental Disorders (DSM). Many people, however, report feeling an negative reaction or even fear of clusters of holes — such as those of a honeycomb, a lotus seed pod or even aerated chocolate.
